Course Description

Business Practices for the Artist is designed to help art students develop and manage their careers and prepare for the realities of life as an artist. Students will evaluate and develop a portfolio and learn to effectively and efficiently manage information, resources, and inventory. The emphasis on visual and written presentation techniques will prepare students to enter exhibitions and competitions, apply for fellowships and grants, and identify, win, and manage pubic art projects. Discussions will include strategies for contacting and maintaining relationships with art dealers, galleries, curators, and collectors. General business practices and relevant legal issues will be discussed in the context of sales agreements, exclusivity, insurance, resumes, letter writing, artists' statements, pricing, and copyright law.
