Student Group Signer Manual

The Chamber Orchestra is a small group of musicians that rehearses weekly. Currently the group is mostly strings, but we encourage anyone who can play an instrument to join. During the Spring of 2013 we met as an EPEC, and as of Fall 2013 we are a recognized student group.

Fall 2013 Mission Statement (used for student group recognition)

The Hampshire College Chamber Orchestra seeks to promote classical orchestral music on campus through practice and performance. The ensemble will be open to any member of the campus community with the ability to read and play music at an appropriate level, and who has access to a functioning instrument. As we want to encourage new members to join, we do not plan to hold formal tryouts. We will strive to accommodate a wide range of instruments and play music in a variety of styles. We plan to rehearse once a week in the Recital Hall in the Music and Dance Building. We will be in communication with Larry Berger about the use of this room, as we were last semester when we met as an EPEC course. Instrument storage will be the responsibility of musicians and instruments will be self-owned. We will be requesting money from the SAF primarily to finance the purchase of sheet music (and of course for advertising and outreach to the campus community). We plan to hold concerts throughout the year to showcase the pieces we have been working on to the campus community. We do not currently have any plans for travel, but organizing outings to other concerts around the consortium (or simply advertising such events) would be a good way to take advantage of the musical opportunities the area has to offer. We still hope to become recognized for this fall, as we'd hoped to be able to promote ourselves at Fall Hampfest with a short performance (probably just the signers playing, since it is easier to organize a duet or trio that way so soon after we get back.) Any additional questions or suggestions are of course welcome.
