Division III Seminar in Research for Creative Writing is an Interdisciplinary Arts class taught by Nathalie Arnold. Instructor permission is required for this course.

Course Description

Research and writing seminar is intended for students in their first semester of Division III whose envisioned project includes fiction-writing, poetry, or creative non-fiction in part or in whole. Our premise is that while creative writing is partly a private, imaginative act, the depth of any piece of fiction or poetry can be improved through active, focused 'real-world' research of one's topic. Students must have subject matter (setting, time period, theme, context) in mind when they begin the course. In addition to close reading of several contemporary novels and poetry collections by authors for whom research is a necessary part of the creative process, assignments will include library, internet, and ethnographic research, and several research based pieces of creative writing to be shared in class. By the end of the semester, each member will have produced a clear project timeline or 'roadmap' for their spring semester completion of Division III.
